David Black, Ambassador for Project Starfish, spoke about the current status of the project. Balclutha was the only Rotary club to offer financial support for the group in New Zealand. Support was also provided by the Norwich club in the UK.
The project is about preventing the atrocities directed at children including child labour and sex slavery.
The project faces barriers of culture and communication as well as those of the environment, the scorpions, spiders and snakes.
Baseline health assessments are carried out. There are clear policies and set criteria for medical students to assess which children need the most help.
David also introduced the work Rotaracts are doing, they come from different countries to join together to assist projects e.g. transplanting banana plants, treating children from the hillside areas of Thailand as well as Project Starfish.
A new program INVADER =  Freedom from sex trafficking was outlined.
