Speaker of the Evening
Eyal Schwartz after moving to New Zealand gave his very first talk in Balclutha, and now his last for a while as our community was fortunate to have him visit again three weeks before he leaves for the USA to work at LIGO for the next year.

Tonight Eyal introduced us to the weird world of quantum mechanics and taught us some amazing experiments created throughout the history of this science.

Along the way we learned about some magical physical effects, antimatter, quantum entanglement and saw a levitating superconductor in action with a bit of liquid nitrogen!

We learned about achieving new states of matter and his research with techniques such as laser cooling atoms, which has the future goal of quantum computation. A fascinating field in which Dr Schwartz has achieved a lot.

Rotary Club of Balclutha thanks Eyal for making the time to share his knowledge with us in such a fun way. We wish him all the very best at LIGO and eagerly await his return for another presentation!
