Speaker of the Evening

Hamish Walker and his fiancée Penny joined us for dinner before Hamish gave an update on his time so far as the National representative for Clutha-Southland. Hamish had arrived from Queenstown, which is a low mileage day for him as MP of the electorate with the biggest area.

Hamish described how he grew up in Dunedin but his family is from Balclutha. His great great great grandfather used to run the government punt across the Clutha River and many streets in the Clutha CBD are named after his family members. Hamish dropped out of school after struggling with the changes involved with a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. He started work in commercial fishing then in mines in Western Australia before going to university and starting his own business.

After quickly learning that politics is all about timing, Hamish strives to listen 80% of the time and talk 20%. He is representing the whole district and wants to help anyone. He described how he most likes to meet people with opposing viewpoints to his own as this is when he learns the most.

Hamish described his achievements in his role so far, from joining the Parliamentary Rugby Team, to organising a protest march for a Queenstown family facing deportation to Sri Lanka after issues with immigration, to mediating concerns in Tuatapere over flax being destroyed. We heard more about the issues around Mycoplasma bovis as well as the mysteries of the private members bill process!

Rotary Club of Balclutha thanks Hamish for the updates and the opportunity to relate with our local MP, keep up the good work!

District News

District is planning a Professional Development Exchange (PDE) with Tasmania. The focus of the PDE will be tourism, agriculture and engineering. The exchange is likely to happen in April 2019.

The PDE Committee will be looking for nominations for a Team Leader and outstanding young people between the ages of 18 and 40 to join the group. Unlike the old Group Study Exchanges, nominations will be open to people who are also Rotarians.

Further information will be following shortly.
