Meeting

PROJECTS
Fertiliser Drive orders have been coming in with a good profit so far.

1000 daffodil bulbs have been purchased and Wayne contacted Mark Way for Venturers to help us plant the new bulbs in the gaps in the letters of Balclutha on the riverbank. Thanks to Donna & Pete for picking up the 100 buckets of bulbs from Mercervale.

Tania shared updates from the Parramatta Office newsletter about Global Polio Eradication Initiative (see weekly updates and figures at polioeradication.org). This year worldwide there have been 14 new cases of wild poliovirus compared with 22 cases this same time last year.
This year the End Polio fundraiser movie screening will be of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sunday 16th September there will be a tidying session at Kaka Point where we could help with collecting litter.

Phil was approached by a local woman asking if the club helps with gardening. She has a small section requiring hedge trim and lawn mowing.

Books for the book sale are continuing to be donated throughout the year, they can be dropped to Johnstone Electrical and Mary has a key to the James St storage.

There is need for short term accommodation in Balclutha with students arriving for placements. If Rotary club members have rooms to rent out, see Phil and Lynda.

The defibrillator is now with Mary at Johnstone Electrical since David is leaving the Dental Centre. Needs to be better advertised as the defib hasn't been hired out yet.

Social Notices

The Club is registering with ‘Loud Shirt Day’, a charitable foundation that supports hearing impaired young people to be able to listen and speak, so for the Thursday 20th September Rotary meeting wear a ‘Loud shirt’ or ‘Superhero’ outfit (or both if you feel so inclined!) President Donna will let us know more in regards to members suggestions for our Club donating to this.

Weatherstons Brewery and Daffodils of Lawrence have a pre pay package available for groups from early September. $35.00 includes a visit to 3 sites and a historic talk from a local tour guide with lunch included. A clipboard will be in circulation over the next few weeks to gauge members interest for this. Extra information at www.lawrence.nz

To keep in mind – our fellow members Ali & Jill have very kindly offered to host a ‘Pot Luck’ meal at their Owaka property over the coming Summer months.

NOMINATION FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP
For Cathy Bennett. Any objections to the secretary.

Speaker of the Evening
This week we were joined by Hans van den Broek from Toastmasters. Hans shared a wealth of knowledge on speaking and judging speeches, timely advice with our upcoming school Speech Competition. Hans explained that Toastmasters is like Rotary in that it is a worldwide organisation divided into clubs. Toastmasters clubs serve to assist with developing communication skills, not only with giving speeches and impromptu speaking, but also to organise and chair events. Clubs provide training to convey words and messages and to listen effectively.

The value of these clubs was apparent with Hans' incredibly engaging and animated speaking style, and to think English is not even his first or second language!

We learned effective content development and organisation, different forms of delivery, and language appropriateness and correctness. Hans also shared with us some magazines from Toastmasters International and their International Speech Contest Judge's Guide and Ballot form which can be downloaded from the Toastmasters International website resources along with other useful articles and information.

Thank you Hans for making the trip to speak with our club, and thanks to David for organising for us to learn skills to be more effective at judging our local students' speeches.

PARTING THOUGHT
from Daniel by C. S. Lewis
"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art...it has no survival value, rather it is one of those things which give value to survival."
