Meeting

Tania and Donna spent the weekend until 4th March in Auckland for South Pacific PETS.
Tania updates about the future of Rotary, NZ and Pacific Islands having 6 districts are not sustainable so long-term strategies will be developed in the coming months and presented at the Australia New Zealand Rotary Conference in Hobart 14-16th September. Conference registration is now open on www.rotaryinstitute.org.au
Donna positively reports from PETS that it will be a good year with lots of opportunities and says the underwear to send to Fiji was much appreciated, thanks to Rotarians and Inner Wheel ladies for their contributions.

The club received a card from Anne-Marie Davis after speaking to us last week, she wrote in thanks for our hospitality and the pen.

SPEAKER OF THE EVENING
Kevin Baff started his career with the Royal Australian Air Force, did an exchange to Canada to work with RCAF before working with RAF and RNZAF. Kev ended up working for International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in International Humanitarian Law as the Armed & Security Forces Delegate/Coordinator.

The ICRC is posted in armed conflict as opposed to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who manage natural disasters. ICRC was established in 1863 and is still based in Geneva. It is a NIHA (Neutral Independant Humanitarian Action) organisation and works to transfer the Geneva Conventions to national law.

Kevin explains that their most effective tool is education and not eliminating the enemy, especially as younger enemy fighters that take their place don't know anything about ICRC and have known nothing but war and will be holding a grudge.

Thanks Kevin for sharing photos of the Middle East and for explaining the difficult work you have done over an incredible career.
