Speaker of the Evening

Phil attracted a lot of visitors to the meeting to hear his fantastic presentation of his recent trek around Nepal.

As the first developing country that Phil had visited, arriving in Kathmandu in the early hours of the morning was even more of a culture shock! Videos of the streets of Thamel showed how chaotic the traffic seems, but Phil commends the Nepali people for their incredible patience, understanding and kindness, even while being held up on the roads.

From Kathmandu, Phil's group flew to Lukla which is 9000ft high in the Himalayas where the weather can change fast, giving it the reputation of being the world's most dangerous airport. From here the trek began with walking to the village of Phakding and onwards to Namche, Tengboche, Lobuche and to the Khumbu Glacier beside which lies Everest Base Camp.

Phil and his group trekked for 17 days with up to 18km of walking in a day, made even more challenging by the exhausting effects of altitude reaching as high as 5550m above sea level at Kala Patthar!

We enjoyed Phil's stories of the lovely Nepali people and of making four-legged friends among the mule trains, using yak poo as fire fuel and the miraculous solar pot boiler! Thanks Phil, you have inspired more than a few of us to experience the wonders of Nepal.
