Speakers of the Evening

This week's meeting was hosted by South Otago Venturer Unit at the Scout Hall where the group put on a fantastic meal for our club as a fundraiser to get local Venturers to Venture 2019 at Kaiwaka in Northland.

Mark, the Venturer's leader, described the 10 day Venture as similar to Jamboree but there are less campers and more activities! Venturers are aged 14-18yrs and about 800-1000 will be at Venture over New Year and into the first week of January.

One of the Venturers, Briar, says Jamboree is fun but Venture is even better, the first five days is spent on an expedition and phase two is in camp with five days of activities with a party atmosphere each night at concerts and shows such as comedy night. At the last Venture Briar chose caving for her expedition so told us about the time she spent underground crawling around Waitomo Caves! After seeing photos on the slideshow there was genuine concern on how the Venturers find their tent in the huge camp! Briar explained it's useful that about 2/3 are Australian with matching tents so the New Zealand Venturers can at least recognise their different coloured tents!

Both leader and Venturers describe it as an incredible experience to strengthen leadership and time management skills and the leaders encourage independence and to take responsibility for their own schedule. The event caters for all interests and skill levels and guides youth to become great leaders.

South Otago is sending 9 Venturers and Scouts who are choosing a range of expeditions; "An AWOL Adventure" abseiling etc., "Lost in the Wild" and co-ordinating their own rescue, "Start Your Engine" to build a car, and the comparatively relaxing "Sun, Surf and Sand" cruise! At camp there are some activities at extra cost such as skydiving, so there is a lot of fundraising to be done to get everyone to Venture.

Danyon told us about their other fundraising projects; setting up and running the canteen for shearing and wool-handling competitions, and after working at firewood days the Venturers have firewood for sale._____________________________________
